Time for my weekly Sunday video game devlog.
...it's what day?
WUH OH!So, once again it was a BUSY BUSY week between work and band stuff, so... did I get as much dev work done as I would have liked?
...no...
...but, I still got a good amount done, so I'm gonna call it a win.
I finally got to the section of the game that features a short first-person dungeon crawling segment, so I've been making assets for that.
imagine runnin' into THIS guy in a dungeon
is... is he ok...HMMM.... it's hard to talk about all the things in this area of the game without being insanely spoiler heavy....
Let's just say it's an important area of the game. The end of the first act. The great big doo doo.
This location is called "The Goon Cave" in the filesystem.Anyway, I also spent a full day re-writing the scenes for this area, too. It's definitely the most challenging part of the story to get right... I want to make sure the big twists are effective and shocking, but I think when you're writing bad guys, you have to make sure that you don't unwittingly endorse their viewpoints, you know?
Like, imagine you have an evil king who thinks all orcs should be put to death. You don't want to make the evil king's speech so convincing that the reader thinks "yeah, actually.... he's right we SHOULD murder people based on race" or something like that. Not to say all writing has to be moralistic... but, NegRev IS a look at human intelligence and the illusion of meritocracy in American tech circles...
ANYWAY, that's all to say it's an interesting puzzle to solve, as a writer!
I spent a LOT of time practicing guitar this week. I discovered a real weak spot in my playing and it's something kinda simple and beginner-ish, too! When I do two pull-offs on a single string, I'm VERY bad at having all three notes sound off equally and having them last equal amounts of time. I've started to drill it on the daily and while I'm not up to snuff yet... I'm seeing some improvement, so that's good.
It's also close enough to the time for me to be moving house that I've started looking at new places and visiting them. So... just a heads up, SOON I'll have to take a week or two off of gamedev to move into a new house. I'll letcha know when it happens. For now... lord, I gotta pack more stuff.
I also tried playing some games I've never gotten into before. Have you ever played Shinobi III on the Genesis? Holy moly, it's awesome. I don't think I've ever even seen it or heard of it, but it's sick. I also gave Startropics on the NES a try for the first time since I was a little kid and honestly... I like it!! I think I've heard less-than-stellar reviews of it before, but it's got a lot going on. I like that it's got action that isn't reaction or memorization based. It constantly plays tricks on you and kills you in ways that SEEM unfair, but when you REALLY OBSERVE your surroundings, you can almost always figure out the solution. Good game.
Ok, bye! Sorry about the late post, I'll try to be on time next week!! Thanks for all the birthday wishes last week! <3
